Murrayville, Illinois
has an interesting history, dating back to 1823, when the first
pioneer families, the Storys and the Wrights, settled here. Located
twelve miles south of Jacksonville, Illinois, on the Chicago, Alton
and St. Louis Railroad, Murrayville is and has always been a community
of people who are "dedicated to each other and ready to help
in time of need."
Murrayville was
named after Mr. Samuel Murray. The Samuel Murray family came to America
in 1835, and after living three years in Pennsylvania came to Illinois,
taking five months to make the journey. They settled in Morgan County
where Murrayville now stands. Under Mr. Murray's supervision,
the town was surveyed and platted out on January 5, 1858. It was
at this time that the town was named Murrayville. Interestingly,
in 1863 an effort was made to change the name of the town to Itan
and it was known by that name for some time, but because it was better
known as Murrayville, they went back to that name.
Today, residents continue to enjoy this rural community that was established
nearly 150 years ago.
